善の方向へと自己形成へ導いてくれる人これを、仏法では善知識という
天台大師は三種あるといわれている
①外護（げご）
　　　　　　　守り、安心して学べる環境を作ってくれる人、守護してくれる人
②同行（どうぎょう）
　　　　　　　　　　切磋琢磨できる仲良き仲間たち
③教授（きょうじゅ）
　　　　　　　　　　様々な教えを乞うことができる指導者
　　　　　　　　　　善とは何かを教えてくれる先生
その反対に、不幸にし、命を落ち込ませ、元気をなくさせるものを悪知識という
どうありたいか、どうしたいか　その願望が善智識を呼び起こしていく
人生は誓願（せいがん）によって善智識が現れてくる
どのような人生を送りたいかが大事なのである
