国民生活センターによると、昨年１２月には４０代女性が被害相談の中で最多の８０００万円をだまし取られた。「出会い系サイト被害全国連絡協議会」として活動してきた弁護士グループは「サクラサイト被害全国連絡協議会」と名称変更し、対策に本腰を入れ始めた。
岐阜県の４０代主婦は、４４６０万円の被害に遭った。相談を受けた小泉友弁護士によると、１０年６月に「プレゼントに当選した」と携帯電話にメールが入り、アクセスしたアドレスが出会い系のサクラサイトだった。「お金はあるが心に余裕がない」と悩みを訴えるメールを受け取り、相談に乗った。「アド券」「権利券」などの名目で利用料１回７万～８万円を運営会社から請求され、メールの相手が後で負担してくれると思い込み１年半にわたり振り込んだ。
サクラサイトは出会い系や求人などのメール交換サイトに多い。多くのサイトは有料で、利用者がメール交換するほど業者がもうかる仕組み。「サクラ」が「メル友になってほしい」「事業に資金を提供する」などと持ちかけ、多くのメール交換をさせる。
