鳩ヶ谷市と川口市が合併し５７万都市誕生
2010年10月に行われた市長選挙と市議会議員選挙において、市長選挙では合併推進派の木下市長の再選となった、議員は合併推進派７名に対して慎重・反対派は7名となり拮抗していたが、議長裁決で約61年ぶりに川口市との再合併が事実上決まった。
鳩ヶ谷市は鳩ヶ谷町時代の1940年（昭和15年）に新郷村、神根村、芝村と共に当時の国策によって強制的に川口市へ編入合併されたが、第二次世界大戦敗戦後の1950年（昭和25年）に再度、当時の旧鳩ヶ谷町域の住民の民意により住民投票を行った上で川口市から分離し、鳩ヶ谷町を再建した。これにより、川口市への残留を決定していた旧新郷村域が川口の飛び地となった。この飛び地は1956年（昭和31年）に安行村が川口市へ編入合併されたことに伴い解消しているが、その結果として現在に至るまで当市（1967年（昭和42年）に市制施行）は南側の一部が東京都足立区に接する箇所を除き、周囲一帯を川口市に取り囲まれる形状となっていた
なお、旧新郷村が飛び地になるにも関わらず川口市への残留を決定し、かつ安行村という現在の川口市の北東部においてかつて存在していた村落は、地理的に鳩ヶ谷との合併の可能ではあったが、川口との関係をめぐり政情が不安定な鳩ヶ谷よりも、順調に経済が発展していた川口との合併を選択した
